DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A passenger was killed and the driver was hurt Saturday morning when a car left SC 340 in Darlington County and flipped, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened around 11:30 a.m. Lt. Tyler Tidwell of the Highway Patrol said a 2017 Toyota Corolla heading south struck the back end of a 2019 Mazda3 on the highway. The Corolla then ran off the pavement, hit a ditch and rolled over.

Two people were inside the Corolla. The passenger died, and the driver was taken to an area hospital. The Highway Patrol has not released the condition of the driver or the names of either person.

No one riding in the Mazda3 was hurt.

The Highway Patrol investigates fatal wrecks on state roads and has not said what caused the Corolla to strike the other car. Troopers had released no further details as of Sunday.
