FLORENCE, S.C. — A passenger was killed and the driver badly hurt early Saturday when an SUV ran off Hoffmeyer Road in Florence County, struck a tree and rolled over.
Crews with Florence County Fire Rescue reached the 3300 block of Hoffmeyer Road, close to Aster Road, after a call at about 1:25 a.m. Fire officials first reported two people with critical injuries, both thrown from the vehicle.
The 2010 Honda SUV had been heading east when it left the road, Cpl. David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. The passenger was pronounced dead where the SUV came to rest, while the driver was hospitalized.
The tree the SUV hit came down onto residential power lines, according to fire officials. Firefighters and paramedics treated both people before the driver was moved to the hospital.
Troopers have not said what led to the wreck, and neither person has been publicly identified.
