FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. — Rescue crews spent roughly an hour cutting a trapped driver out of a wrecked car Tuesday afternoon after the vehicle left U.S. Highway 378 and slammed into a tree in eastern Florence County.
Florence County Fire Rescue was sent around 3:30 p.m. to the area where the highway meets Capitola Road. According to firefighters, the car rolled over and came to rest against a tree after leaving the highway, with the man pinned inside.
Crews used the Jaws of Life to reach him. Heavy damage to the car slowed the work, and the man was not free for about an hour.
Medics with the Johnsonville Rescue Squad took him by ambulance toward Kingsburg, meeting a medical helicopter at a fire station there for the flight to a hospital. His condition was not released.
Highway 378 was closed for a time while emergency crews worked the scene. State troopers will determine why the car left the road; the South Carolina Highway Patrol has the case.
