FLORENCE, S.C. — Two people suffered critical injuries early Friday when two pickup trucks met head-on on East Palmetto Street in Florence County, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation.
The call came in at about 12:10 a.m., and the county fire service, Florence County Fire Rescue, sent Engines 841 and 831 to E. Palmetto Street, where the wreck sat in the 4000 block close to a Bojangles restaurant.
Information passed to dispatchers indicated that one of the pickups had been heading the wrong way before it struck the other truck.
Firefighters pulled both injured people from the wreckage and gave first aid while waiting for additional medical crews. An ambulance crew from Florence County EMS took the pair to a hospital in the area. Their names and conditions beyond critical have not been released.
Eastbound East Palmetto Street was shut down for a time while crews worked the scene.
Troopers have not said what led the driver to travel against traffic or whether charges are expected.
