Florence, S.C. — The City of Florence has started a $450,000 project to fix ongoing sewer problems along Hoffmeyer Road, with overnight construction that began Monday, Oct. 12.
A contractor will work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to limit disruption to daytime traffic. The first step is an inspection and assessment of the existing sewer main in the West End, which is expected to take about three to five days.
The work follows recurring sewer problems earlier this year, including blockages and foul odors. Assistant City Manager Clint Moore said a blockage along Hoffmeyer Road has required temporary bypass pumps, and the project is meant to fix current problems while preparing for future growth.
Crews expect to make two to three point repairs, digging up and replacing specific sections of the main. After that, they will use a trenchless method, either pipe bursting to install new high-density polyethylene pipe or an epoxy fiberglass liner inside the existing pipe.
Traffic control will be set up only where crews are working and will move as the job progresses. Work is starting in the Five Points area and will move along Hoffmeyer Road toward Darlington Street. Florence runs a council-manager form of city government.
