Florence, S.C. — City crews are preparing overnight sewer repairs along Hoffmeyer Road beginning Monday, Oct. 12, as Florence officials and MUSC Health continue checking odor complaints that temporarily closed two medical offices on the corridor.

Construction is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to limit daytime traffic impacts. Work will run along Hoffmeyer Road between the Five Points intersection and Darlington Street, with traffic control limited to active work zones that move as crews advance.

The city said the project will open with a three- to five-day inspection of the existing sewer main, then about two to three localized point repairs that require digging out damaged sections. After that, crews plan trenchless rehabilitation meant to cut surface disruption, either by pipe-bursting new high-density polyethylene pipe into place or lining the existing pipe with epoxy fiberglass.

MUSC Health temporarily closed its outpatient rehabilitation center and primary care clinic at 1925 Hoffmeyer Road while the odor was assessed and said it expected to reopen Thursday, Oct. 8. The health system said it was working with Florence Public Works and contacting patients to reschedule care.

City officials said inspections are under way on public sewer lines while MUSC hired a third-party plumber for private lines, and that the source of the smell has not been confirmed. Crews have also worked to keep a temporary bypass pump on the Hoffmeyer sewer main operating.

Officials previously estimated about 90 days of work with completion in winter 2026, though a firmer end date is expected after the initial inspection. Drivers are asked to allow extra time through the corridor overnight.
