FLORENCE, S.C. — More than 250 American flags now line the front of West Florence High School in Florence, South Carolina, set out Monday by students in a club that only formed this fall.
The school’s Interact Club, a student service and leadership group sponsored by the Florence West Rotary Club, opened the display with a dedication ceremony that included a presentation of colors by the school’s JROTC cadets and remarks from student leaders.
Each flag honors a person who serves or served, either in the military or as a first responder, and the names of those honored are shown during the display. Community members paid for the flags through donations, with the donation window closing Nov. 2.
The flags stay up through Friday, Nov. 13, spanning Election Day and Veterans Day. Each 3-by-5-foot flag rides on an 8-foot pole. The club adopted its charter and bylaws this fall, and the flag field is its first project. Rotary West members helped plan it over about two months and attended the ceremony.
