FLORENCE, S.C. — Shoppers in the Pee Dee will finally get a Publix of their own next month, when the Florida-based chain cuts the ribbon on a Florence store.
Doors at the Palmetto Place location are set for 7 o’clock on the morning of Nov. 18, company spokespeople said this week.
Floor plans call for nearly 47,000 square feet of retail space, and managers expect to bring on about 140 workers to staff the aisles, deli and pharmacy counters.
Jared Glover, speaking for the chain, said Florence customers should expect the friendly service Publix markets elsewhere, and the store plans to back neighborhood groups after opening day.
For years, Pee Dee residents have driven toward Columbia or Myrtle Beach for a Publix run. The new store sits in West Florence, the city corridor already packed with big-box retail near the I-95 and I-20 interchange.
Company leaders framed the Florence debut as their first supermarket east of the Midlands in this region, not a short-term pop-up.
