FLORENCE, S.C. — Short-track racing in the Pee Dee is losing one of its best-known stops. Florence Motor Speedway said this week that its oval will sit quiet in 2027, with no schedule coming and no races on the books.
The track, a 4/10-mile asphalt oval, made the announcement on its social media pages. Management said it has fought to keep the gates open since it took over in 2020, yet every season has grown harder, and after weighing several options it decided that racing there is no longer workable. No specific financial reasons were given.
The final stretch is still on the calendar. Fans still get a send-off. A 2X Monster Trucks show comes first, then two November race weekends: the South Carolina 250 and the South Carolina 400, which reaches its 34th running this year.
With Florence dark, the state is left with just two active paved tracks, Dillon Motor Speedway and Anderson Motor Speedway. The Florence track has drawn big names over the years, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. has raced there in CARS Tour events and the South Carolina 400.
