FLORENCE, S.C. — Annie Andrews, the Democrat running for U.S. Senate, campaigned in Florence on Saturday, Oct. 17, two days before in-person early voting opens across South Carolina, and urged supporters to make a plan to cast ballots and bring others along.
Georgia U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock and Jermaine Johnson, the Democratic candidate for governor, joined her at the rally. Andrews said living costs come up more than any other issue on the trail, pointing to what people pay for gas, diesel and groceries, and she raised worries about rural hospitals closing and proposed Medicaid cuts.
Local Democratic leaders, among them Councilwoman LaShonda NeSmith-Jackson, said the job now is turning that energy into turnout.
On the Nov. 3 ballot, Andrews is up against Republican incumbent Darline Graham, along with Mark Hackett of the Constitution Party and Libertarian Kasie Whitener.
Early voting runs from Monday, Oct. 19, through Saturday, Oct. 31, with centers open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Florence County has seven sites, including the county elections office at 219 3rd Loop Road and Mt. Zion AME Church at 1305 E. Cheves St. in Florence, plus libraries in Johnsonville, Timmonsville, Lake City, Pamplico and Olanta. Voters must show a photo ID.
