Judge Clears Quarles-Daniels to Play for Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s basketball has its point guard for now. A judge in California on Tuesday granted an injunction that makes Brooke Quarles-Daniels and the other players in her lawsuit against the NCAA eligible for the 2026-27 season.

Judge Beth McGowan issued the ruling in Glancey v. NCAA, one of many suits filed in different courts by athletes from the class of 2022. They argue that the NCAA’s new five-years-to-play-five-seasons format, adopted this summer, was timed in a way that unfairly took away a fifth season. Under that format the eligibility clock starts at enrollment, or at the start of the school year after an athlete turns 19, and most redshirts and waivers are gone.

The players had been playing under a temporary restraining order. A Sept. 29 hearing ended without a decision, and the order was extended to Oct. 20 so more witnesses could testify.

The NCAA plans to appeal and is expected to ask for a stay. Should a court grant that request, the plaintiffs would sit until their case goes to trial. Without one, they stay on the floor in the meantime, and recent cases suggest a denial is likely. Because she would be competing under a court order, South Carolina could not be forced to forfeit games she plays in.

Quarles-Daniels committed to the Gamecocks on Aug. 28, weeks after expected starting point guard Maddy McDaniel left the program. She started 31 of 35 games for Michigan last season, averaging 5.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals, and earned Big Ten All-Defensive honors. She began her career at Oakland, where she earned the league’s top freshman award in 2023.

She scored four points off the bench in the September exhibition against College of Charleston. The top-ranked Gamecocks close the preseason Friday against Benedict before opening the season Nov. 2.
