Minnesota’s pheasant index jumps 20%; west central up 74%

Minnesota’s pheasant index jumps 20%; west central up 74%

Minnesota’s opening-season pheasant math got a lot friendlier this year. The state’s 2026 roadside index came in at 90 birds per 100 miles of route driven, up from 75 in 2025 — a rise of nearly 20 percent, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ survey release. The west central region did the heavy lifting inside that statewide number, increasing 74 percent year over year.

The roadside index is not a hunting-success prediction, but it is the single most-watched preseason signal in the upper Midwest, and a 20 percent jump changes the shape of opening weekend. It also tracks with the broader Prairie Pothole picture emerging from the same weekend of survey data: North Dakota’s parallel upland brood survey reported 80 pheasants per 100 miles, up 3.8 percent from 2025 and 57 percent above the 10-year average.

The habitat backbone under those pheasant numbers is the federal Conservation Reserve Program, which pays landowners to retire environmentally sensitive cropland into grass and cover. USDA accepted 2.2 million acres into CRP for 2026 against a statutory cap of 27 million acres, according to a review of CRP enrollment trends that pulls from USDA data. That gap between what farmers signed up and what the program is allowed to hold is where most of the future upside — and downside — for prairie pheasant populations will play out.

For hunters, the immediate translation of the 20-percent index rise is that opening weekend and the first few weekends after it will feel more like the pheasant seasons of the mid-2000s than the last few slow years. That is what a west central Minnesota county number pushing 74 percent above its 2025 pace looks like in the field: more birds flushing per mile walked and per acre hunted, particularly in blocks with intact grass cover.
