Sponsor Our ArticlesDaniel Hupp, a Colleyville veteran, has completed his dental education at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry and is set to serve as a Navy officer. After a decade in the Marine Corps, he reassessed his career path and decided to pursue dentistry to balance family life and skills for civilian life. His persistence, mentorship, and strong work ethic helped him succeed in dental school, and he looks forward to new challenges within the Navy for the next four years.
Texas – Daniel Hupp, a Colleyville veteran, has successfully transitioned from the U.S. Marine Corps to the Navy as a dentist, completing his dental education at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. Hupp graduated on May 25 and is set to start his new role shortly as a Navy officer at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he will serve for four years.
Hupp’s military career spans ten years in the Marine Corps, where he served as a Naval Flight Officer, undertaking combat missions in both Syria and Iraq. After resigning from the Marines in 2021, he quickly reenlisted in the Navy the following day to take part in the Health Services Collegiate Program. This program allowed him to pursue a career in dentistry while still being affiliated with the military.
His decision to focus on dentistry stemmed from discussions with his squadron’s flight surgeon. Hupp expressed a desire for a profession that would provide not only valuable skills for civilian life but also allow for more family time. He and his wife, Sidney, have three young children who were residing in North Carolina during his military deployments.
While initially considering dentistry in college, Hupp earned a bachelor’s degree in international business and finance from the University of South Carolina. However, he continued to take science courses over the years while stationed in various locations, including North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Japan, and Turkey, all in preparation for dental school. Texas A&M was his first choice for dental education, influenced by family connections and his roots in North Richland Hills.
Despite his military background, Hupp faced notable challenges in attending dental school full-time. He experienced moments of feeling overwhelmed by the rigorous academic requirements. Nevertheless, he developed a mentorship relationship with Dr. George Cramer, a fellow aviator and Marine Corps veteran, which helped him navigate his educational journey.
During his time in the dental program, Hupp gained respect among faculty for his strong work ethic, curiosity, and dedication to learning demonstrated throughout his clinical rotations. He also contributed to the success of his classmates by sacrificing personal time to help manage patient workloads during busy clinic sessions.
Enrolled in the Health Services Collegiate Program, Hupp received a salary, although he was responsible for his tuition costs. His prior service in the Marines will aid his Navy retirement. After completing one year of residency rotations, he is expected to serve four years at different locations around the globe. Hupp has shown particular interest in pursuing rotations in oral surgery and endodontics, but he has not made definitive plans regarding remaining in the military afterward, contemplating the possibility of private practice instead.
Throughout this transition, Hupp has committed to ensuring his family’s support as he prepares for any future training or educational opportunities, balancing his obligations as a naval officer, a dentist, and a family man.
