Tom Lee is survived by his wife, Fiona; his daughter, Christine; his son, Jeffrey, and daughter-in-law, Reena; as well as his beloved grandchildren, Coby and Ania. His passing has left a significant void in the lives of family and friends who cherished his jovial spirit.

Early Life and Education

Born on July 8, 1942, in Hong Kong, Tom was the youngest child of Woon Foo and Yee Yong Lee. Following the example of his older siblings, he immigrated to Australia, where he completed high school and enjoyed many adventures with his numerous cousins. In 1966, Tom embarked on a new journey to the United States, joining his brother Herbert Lee and sister Margaret Chui.

Tom furthered his education in the US, earning a Master’s degree from the University of California, San Diego. He later attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he completed his PhD and met his wife, Fiona. The couple married on June 30, 1973, and settled in Whitehouse Station, NJ, where they welcomed two children, Christine and Jeffrey.

Professional Accomplishments

Throughout his impressive career, Tom worked as a chemist for renowned companies like Merck and Hoechst Celanese. In later years, he advanced to a senior director position in process development at Roche in Florence, SC. Tom retired from the industry in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of scientific contributions and mentorship.

Life after Retirement

After retiring, Tom relocated several times, living in San Leandro, CA; Havre de Grace, MD; and Rockville, MD. During his retirement, he enjoyed investing in stocks and was an avid player of tennis, transitioning to pickleball as years went by. Tom also loved playing poker and mahjong, often gathering with friends and family for game nights.

Tom and Fiona traveled extensively, creating cherished memories on cruises and exploring destinations known for their excellent Chinese cuisine. Engaging with his grandchildren brought him immense joy, whether it was teaching them how to fish or playing tennis in the park.

Legacy and Memorial Arrangements

Tom was a beacon of light in the lives of everyone he met, known for lifting spirits with his steadfastness and understanding. His legacy of kindness and generosity will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.

A private funeral service for immediate family will be held on July 5, 2025. Following this, a celebration of Tom’s life is scheduled for July 12, 2025, with additional details expected to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to the American Heart Association, reflecting Tom’s love for life and commitment to helping others.

As family and friends gather to honor Thomas B.K. Lee, they will remember him not only for his professional achievements but also for the joy he brought to the lives around him.
