Math scores improved by more than one and a half points, although only 43.9% of students met proficiency standards in that area.

Weaver noted that the improvements in reading can be attributed to recent adjustments in instructional methods, emphasizing a structured, phonics-based approach. To further enhance math instruction across the state, the Palmetto Math Project is set to launch.

Comparative performance shows that elementary students outperformed middle school students, with scores typically declining as grade levels increase. For instance, in 2025, 22.2% of fifth graders did not meet math skill expectations, marking a slight increase from 2024. The SC READY exam, which assesses students in grades three through eight in reading, writing, and math, has been instrumental in identifying these trends.

State leaders have also observed that reading scores have rebounded from the pandemic’s adverse effects, currently surpassing pre-pandemic figures recorded in 2019. The SC READY test metrics have undergone adjustments, leading to new cut scores for proficiency that differ from those used in previous years. Notably, in Horry County, 64% of students scored at the highest reading level, again surpassing state averages.
