An updated report from the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC issued strong thunderstorm alerts for Marlboro and Darlington counties, effective until 3:15 a.m. These storms brought wind gusts of up to 40 mph along with pea-sized hail, measuring approximately 0.25 inches.

Doppler radar first tracked the thunderstorms at 1:57 a.m., noting that they extended from seven miles north of Cheraw Municipal Airport to nine miles north of Sumter County Airport, moving northeast at a pace of 30 mph. The strong winds associated with the storm have potential to knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also anticipated. Key areas affected include Bennettsville, Hartsville, Darlington, and Mccoll, along with portions of Interstate 20 near mile marker 126. Residents are strongly advised to seek indoor shelter during these dangerous conditions.

Statistics highlight the risks associated with thunderstorms; the U.S. experiences approximately 25 million lightning strikes each year, primarily in summertime, resulting in around 20 fatalities annually. Matthews reported sightings of a small tornado in Columbus County in addition to downed trees in Robeson County and Orange County.

In the wake of the storms, over 1,600 residents are currently without power in Dillon County, with an additional 230 customers experiencing outages in Marlboro County. Duke Energy is actively working to restore power, estimating that services will return by 12:30 a.m. Reports indicate varying degrees of damage in Dillon County, with scattered trees observed along Highway 301 North and South, along with minor flooding in particular areas.

An Amtrak train experienced minor damage after encountering a tree that had fallen across the railroad track.
