Spartanburg, SC – Laura Sue Henderson Sutherlin, a cherished member of the Spartanburg community, passed away at the age of 88 on May 17, 2025. Known for her devotion to her family and her warm personality, Sue was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.
Sue was born on November 4, 1936, in Greenville, SC, to Newman Henry Henderson and D.C.E. Ezell Henderson. After graduating from Spartanburg High School, she furthered her education at Cecil’s Business College. Throughout her career, Sue made significant contributions in various roles including newspaper advertising sales, a buyer for The Brass Shop, and as a department manager and buyer with Belk-Hudson in Spartanburg.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Sue was well-regarded for her welcoming home, which was a gathering place for her family. She found joy in simple pleasures like gardening, visiting the beach, and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sue’s devotion to her family was evident and she fostered lasting bonds that will be cherished by those who knew her.
She was married to William A. Sutherlin for 60 years, and together they shared a life filled with love and mutual support. Sue is survived by her husband, William, two daughters, Rhonda Sutherlin (Al) of Stuart, FL, and Lisa Sutherlin Bird of Florence, SC, as well as two sons, William Lee Sutherlin (Jennifer) of Waynesville, NC, and Robert Gray Sutherlin (Cynthia) of Farmington Hills, MI. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Rebecca Dawkins, Preston Dawkins, Laura Townley, Ashley Humrickhouse, Beau Sutherlin, Blake Sutherlin, Brett Sutherlin, and Luke Sutherlin, and was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren.
Sue’s family remembers her as a pillar of strength and a source of unconditional love. She was preceded in death by her sister, Odetta Henderson McGarity. Her legacy of love and dedication will continue to resonate within her family.
A visitation for Sue will be held at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Family and friends can extend their condolences and share memories during this time. A service honoring Sue’s life is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC. After the service, attendees will have the opportunity to greet the family at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve or Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. For those wishing to send flowers, arrangements can be made through Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel or local florists in Spartanburg. An online guest register is available for those who wish to convey condolences and share memories.
