Florence, SC – John Henry Gardner, a trailblazing police officer and cherished member of the Florence community, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 86. Gardner made significant contributions to the Florence Police Department, becoming one of the city’s first black police officers, and was known for his vibrant personality, humor, and musical talent.
Born on February 4, 1939, in Florence County, South Carolina, Gardner was the youngest of sixteen children to parents James Webster Gardner and Mable Brown Gardner, both of whom have predeceased him. He received his education in the public schools of Florence County, graduating from Wilson High School in 1958 where he was a member of the football team. His strong sense of community and faith was evident when he accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and became an active member of Wayside Chapel Baptist Church.
Gardner’s commitment to serving others extended beyond his faith and education. He enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served his country. Following his military service, Gardner dedicated himself to public service by joining the City of Florence Police Department. His groundbreaking appointment as one of the first black police officers in Florence paved the way for future generations. After his tenure with the police department, Gardner transitioned to a career as an Over the Road (OTR) truck driver, continuing to be recognized for his hard work and dedication.
Gardner is survived by two children: John Eric (Johnna) Gardner and Rhonda Gardner, both residing in Effingham, SC. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Jessica (Roderick) Dennis of Gainesville, FL, Erica (Darrell) Graham of Darlington, SC, John Eric “EJ” (Latisha Mann) Gardner, Jr. of Florence, SC, and Jacob T. “JT” Gardner of Effingham, SC. In addition, Gardner is survived by six great-grandchildren: Chance Mason of Florence, SC, DaShawn Lucas of Darlington, SC, and Mirakle, Heaven, Nevaeh, and Promise Dennis, all from Gainesville, FL. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
As family and friends mourn his passing, they will receive visitors at 3066 Red Berry Circle, Effingham, SC. A service to honor Gardner’s life will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Wayside Chapel Baptist Church, located at 1815 N. Cashua Dr., Florence, SC. The service will commence from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM (Eastern Time). Following the service, interment will be held at Florence National Cemetery, located at 1001 Stockade Dr., Florence, SC, from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM (Eastern Time).
The Gardner family has requested thoughts and prayers for their comfort during this difficult time, as they prepare to celebrate a life filled with service, humor, and love.
