Boeing 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina

News Summary

In a historic deal announced by the White House, Qatar Airways plans to purchase up to 210 Boeing jets, significantly impacting the U.S. economy and creating numerous jobs in South Carolina. The agreement includes Boeing’s 777 and 787 Dreamliner models and is expected to support approximately 154,000 U.S. jobs annually. Boeing’s North Charleston plant, the sole assembly site for all 787 Dreamliners, stands to benefit substantially from this deal, with local leaders optimistic about job growth and economic stimulation in the area.

South Carolina – In a landmark agreement, Qatar Airways has committed to purchasing up to 210 Boeing jets, a deal announced by the White House that is expected to significantly bolster the U.S. economy and enhance employment opportunities in South Carolina. The purchase includes between 160 and 200 jets, comprising Boeing’s 777 and 787 Dreamliner models.

This historic agreement is poised to support approximately 154,000 U.S. jobs annually, leading to more than 1 million jobs during the production and delivery phases spanning from 2029 to 2036. While Boeing has yet to confirm specific details regarding the deal, initial indications suggest it could bring thousands of new jobs to the company’s manufacturing facility in North Charleston.

The North Charleston plant is particularly critical to this development as it is the sole assembly site for all 787 Dreamliners. Currently, the plant employs over 8,000 workers, and local leaders are optimistic that this order will stimulate substantial job growth for the area. Business owners, including those in the hospitality sector, foresee positive economic impacts for the local community, particularly for working-class individuals.

The transaction also echoes a broader trend of major orders for Boeing jets, as just recently, Korean Air signed a deal for up to 50 planes, some of which will also be assembled in North Charleston. This influx of orders is viewed as a crucial boost for Boeing, which has encountered production issues and labor strikes over the past year, highlighting the importance of stable contracts to sustain and grow its operations.

Boeing previously unveiled a $1 billion investment plan dedicated to its North Charleston facility, with a commitment to create 500 new jobs over the next five years. The recent Qatar Airways order represents Boeing’s largest-ever deal for widebody aircraft, further underscoring the significance of this aircraft manufacturer on the global stage.

In specific terms, the Qatar Airways order encompasses 130 of the 787 Dreamliners made in South Carolina and 30 of the 777 planes that will be built in Washington state. Additionally, there is an option for an extra 50 planes in the agreement, highlighting the potential for further growth in this partnership.

The order was finalized in an event attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, alongside executives from Boeing. This moment is not only a milestone for Boeing but also marks Qatar Airways’ ascendance as the leading operator of 787 Dreamliners in the Middle East as a result of this order.

As Boeing’s Dreamliner program continues to thrive, the aircraft will be powered by engines manufactured by GE Aerospace, an American company, which adds another dimension to the domestic economic benefits of this deal. The broader context of this agreement is framed by a comprehensive set of economic accords valued at $244 billion between the U.S. and Qatar, positioning this contract as a vital component of a larger strategy to enhance bilateral economic relations.

Historically, the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner to be constructed in South Carolina made its debut in April 2012, following substantial investments and commitments from Boeing. Since then, the company has progressively expanded its operations in South Carolina, benefiting from taxpayer incentives offered in exchange for job creation promises. This order marks a significant success for Boeing, reinforcing its economic impact on both South Carolina and the wider U.S. economy.
