News Summary

Novant Health has unveiled plans for its first hospital in the Upstate region of South Carolina, featuring a 20-bed facility aimed at enhancing outpatient care. With a projected cost of $132 million, the hospital will be located on Patewood Drive, and is expected to address the significant shortage of healthcare facilities in Greenville County, which currently lacks 111 hospital beds. Additional plans include a 100,000-square-foot medical office building focused on outpatient treatment. The community anticipates improvements in healthcare access and competition as a result of this project.

South Carolina

Novant Health has announced plans to construct its first hospital in the Upstate region of South Carolina. The proposed project involves a 20-bed facility with an estimated cost of $132 million, aimed at enhancing access to outpatient care in the rapidly growing area of Greenville.

The hospital is set to be located on a 12-acre site on Patewood Drive, conveniently situated off Interstate 385. The land for the new hospital was acquired for $17 million in the previous year. In February 2025, Novant Health submitted its Certificate of Need application for the project, with a decision anticipated by summer 2025. If the application receives approval, the hospital could potentially open its doors as early as 2027.

Alongside the hospital, Novant Health plans to build a 100,000-square-foot medical office building. This added facility will focus on outpatient treatment and specialty care, featuring state-of-the-art operating rooms and advanced diagnostic imaging capabilities to optimize patient care.

Healthcare Demand in Greenville

Currently, Greenville County is experiencing a notable shortage of healthcare facilities, with a deficit of 111 hospital beds. This gap highlights the increasing need for additional services, and Novant Health’s project could help alleviate some of these healthcare pressures in the region.

Financially, Novant Health is well-positioned to undertake this expansion, reporting a robust $920 million in net income on operating revenues that approached $10.2 billion in 2024. This strong financial backing supports the company’s commitment to serving patients in the growing Greenville area, where the demand for healthcare services continues to rise.

Leadership and Community Support

Ryan Lee has been appointed as the president of Novant Health’s Greenville region, marking a strategic move to oversee the implementation of healthcare improvements within the locality. Many residents view the introduction of Novant Health as a positive development that will enhance healthcare competition and improve the overall quality of services available.

Patient-Centric Features

The proposed hospital is designed with patient experience in mind, incorporating features that aim to improve navigation through the facility and minimize wait times. Such developments are anticipated to facilitate a more efficient and accessible healthcare environment for patients needing outpatient care.

Broader Expansion Plans

This hospital project aligns with Novant Health’s broader expansion strategy in South Carolina, which includes the upcoming acquisition of three hospitals in the Lowcountry, a deal valued at $2.4 billion set for early 2024. Additionally, starting in 2027, South Carolina is scheduled to remove the Certificate of Need requirement for new hospital constructions, a legislative change that could further accelerate healthcare development in the region.

As Novant Health moves forward with these plans, community members are optimistic about the potential improvements in healthcare services and accessibility brought about by this new hospital and its associated medical facilities.
