Florence is all abuzz as the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team is ready to make a grand return to their home court at the CB&S Bank Arena! After an extensive four-game road trip, the Lions will host two highly anticipated matchups against the Lipscomb Bisons on Thursday, February 20, and the FGCU Eagles on Saturday, February 22, both kicking off at 6 p.m.
Fans have been eagerly waiting since February 1, the last time the team graced their home ground. It’s safe to say that the team is more than ready to put on a show! This is not just a regular series of games; they are looking to shake things up in the Atlantic Sun Conference, where both Lipscomb and FGCU are fierce competitors. Currently, Lipscomb stands strong in third place, while FGCU is soaring at the top, holding first place in the league.
Excitingly, all three teams, including North Alabama, have already secured their spots in the upcoming ASUN Conference Championship tournament. North Alabama clinched their place during their last outing against West Georgia. Now, the Lions are driven by a desire to improve their standing and, most importantly, to achieve victory against Lipscomb—a feat they haven’t accomplished since the 2021-22 season.
The meeting against Lipscomb is particularly noteworthy as it marks the second encounter this season. The first game, held on January 25, saw the Lions falling short, but they are determined to turn the tables this time. Then, just a few days later, the team is set to face FGCU, a powerhouse they haven’t clashed with in two seasons. FGCU comes into the match boasting an impressive 23-3 overall record, remaining unbeaten in conference play at 14-0. The pressure is on!
What fans might find comforting is that the Lions have been performing well at home this season. With an impressive 8-3 record right on their turf and a strong 5-1 mark in conference home games, they’ve outscored their opponents 439 points to 378. Coach and players alike are optimistic that this home advantage will make a vital difference in these critical matchups.
Fans will be excited to cheer on junior forward India Howard, who recently hit a significant milestone by surpassing 500 rebounds in her collegiate career! Meanwhile, Charity Gallegos is showing her prowess on the court by leading in scoring at an average of 15.3 points per game and dishing out 4.5 assists.
And let’s not forget the fun events planned around these games. The promotions will include MVP Night, Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night, Pink Out, Women of Influence Night, and Cheer & Dance Senior Night. There’s something for everyone! Plus, for those unable to attend, fans can catch the action live on ESPN+. Commentary will be provided by a talented team, ensuring an engaging viewing experience.
As a heads-up for all attending, revised parking plans are in effect due to ongoing construction. Specific parking lots—A, B, and C—have been designated for easy access to the arena. So, make sure to arrive early and find your spot!
It’s important to note that the Lions faced a narrow defeat in their previous game against West Georgia, ending with a score of 62-53. However, the team remains focused and ready to bounce back stronger than ever.
With all these factors coming together, the atmosphere at CB&S Bank Arena is bound to be electric. It’s a great time to support the North Alabama Lions, so rally your friends, wear your team colors, and get ready for some thrilling basketball action! Let’s go Lions!
