South Carolina—Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), has officially launched operations at its new facility in Goose Creek, South Carolina. The site, which began operations approximately 60 days ago, is a significant addition to the U.S. naval production landscape, specializing in the construction of submarine and aircraft carrier modules.
The Goose Creek facility encompasses nearly 50 acres of land, boasting around 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space designed to support the production of vital naval components. Just two days before the publication of this report, the facility is set to dispatch its first structural unit to the Newport News Shipbuilding headquarters in Virginia, marking a notable milestone in its operational timeline.
Newport News Shipbuilding holds the unique distinction of being the sole builder of aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy, while also being one of only two companies engaged in submarine construction for the armed forces. The establishment of the Goose Creek operations aims to alleviate production pressures from the main facility in Virginia by specializing in the creation of various modules for submarines and aircraft carriers.
In January 2025, HII acquired all assets of W International SC LLC and Vivid Empire SC LLC, a metal fabricator with operations in South Carolina. While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, this strategic move reflects HII’s long-term commitment to utilizing the robust manufacturing capabilities and workforce present in South Carolina.
The Goose Creek site focuses on producing essential components for the Virginia-Class and Columbia-Class nuclear-powered submarines, which include habitability modules, auxiliary machine rooms, and weapons modules. As operations ramp up, the facility aims to diversify its offerings to include fully outfitted modules complete with doors, walls, and beds, although full production is not expected to reach capacity until 2027-2028.
Currently, the Goose Creek facility employs approximately 475 individuals, with plans to significantly expand the workforce in the near future. Employees participate in a comprehensive 12-week training program on Newport News Shipbuilding operations and enjoy full-time employment benefits during their training period. Since launching this training initiative in October 2021, around 1,200 students have successfully graduated from the program, demonstrating the commitment to workforce development.
Local schools, including Goose Creek High School, have also collaborated with HII to develop tailored curricula that facilitate a smooth transition for students into careers at Newport News Shipbuilding. Such community-focused partnerships ensure that local talent is equipped with the necessary skills for future roles within the company.
Newport News Shipbuilding also maintains a robust economic footprint in the region, investing approximately $500 million annually in local sourcing within the Lowcountry. Furthermore, the company contributes $110 million each year toward workforce investments, which encompass education and scholarship initiatives aimed at fostering local talent and meeting future production needs.
The Goose Creek location is strategically advantageous, offering deep-water and rail transportation access along the Cooper River, facilitating efficient logistics for the transportation of components and materials. As the facility continues to expand and develop its capabilities, it stands as a critical asset to the U.S. naval manufacturing sector and the broader regional economy.
