News Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina has initiated two new venture funds totaling $30 million to boost health innovation in the state. The funds, focused on supporting healthcare startups, aim to address funding gaps faced by innovations transitioning from research to market. With a commitment to improving health outcomes and creating jobs, MUSC is positioning South Carolina as a key player in the health innovation ecosystem.

South Carolina — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has launched two new venture funds, totaling $30 million, designed to enhance health innovation in the state. The announced funds, named 1824 Health Ventures Fund I, LP and South Carolina Health Innovation Fund (SCHIF), LLC, will be pivotal in providing financial support to healthcare startups and innovative companies. Bob Crutchfield, a senior executive with over 30 years in the fields of international business and venture capital, will manage both funds.

The 1824 Health Ventures Fund, named after the year MUSC was founded, is dedicating $20 million in seed capital specifically for startups and emerging companies originating from MUSC. This fund aims to address the critical funding gap that many healthcare innovations face during the transitional phase from academic research to commercial viability, a period often referred to as the “Valley of Death.” It is during this stage that many promising healthcare innovations struggle to find adequate financial backing, which can lead to their failure.

The SCHIF (South Carolina Health Innovation Fund) is a $10 million initiative developed in collaboration between MUSC Health and InvestSC, which serves as the Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) administrator for the state. This fund will focus on high-impact health innovation companies, both accessing support from MUSC as well as those from external locations that are committed to developing and expanding their operations in South Carolina. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen the state’s health innovation ecosystem.

BACKING OF THE FUNDS

The SCHIF fund benefits from a balanced financial structure with equal contributions of $5 million each from the MUSC Foundation and the SSBCI. The goal is to attract and support companies that align with MUSC’s mission to improve health outcomes and generate job opportunities in South Carolina. Through these initiatives, MUSC aims to stimulate the state’s economy by fostering the growth of innovative businesses and creating higher-wage jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

CHALLENGES IN VENTURE CAPITAL

Despite the initiatives’ potential, South Carolina faces challenges in venture capital support, ranking 45th in the nation for venture capital activity, according to U.S. News & World Report. However, the state has witnessed a notable 10th highest growth rate in venture capital relative to its gross domestic product (GDP) from 2012 to 2022. These new funds are a response to such statistics and an effort to position the state as a burgeoning hub for health innovation.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

MUSC has built a strong reputation over the years as a leader in innovation and life sciences within South Carolina. The institution plays a crucial role in developing the workforce needed for health innovation and currently educates more than 3,300 students across six colleges while training over 1,060 residents and fellows within its health system annually. The formation of these venture funds reflects MUSC’s commitment to fostering a sustainable environment for health-related entrepreneurship.

LONG-TERM VISION

The overarching vision for both the 1824 Health Ventures Fund and SCHIF extends beyond immediate financial support; it includes attracting further private investments, driving long-term economic growth, and establishing South Carolina as a national center for health innovation and entrepreneurship. The success of these funds could potentially change the landscape of healthcare innovation in the state, paving the way for future advancements and economic development opportunities.
