The occasion marked the transition to a new CEO, Matthew Cabe, and highlighted Michelin’s significant economic impact, contributing over $266 billion to the local economy. South Carolina commemorated the 50th anniversary of Michelin North America, Inc. during a grand celebration held at the corporate headquarters in Greenville. This milestone event was attended by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and numerous local leaders. The occasion not only celebrated Michelin’s long-standing presence in the state but also heralded a significant transition in its leadership, as founding CEO Alexis Garcin announced that Matthew Cabe would take over the position beginning October 1, 2024.
Michelin’s economic impact in South Carolina has been monumental, amounting to over $266 billion since the company’s inception in the state. Each year, Michelin contributes approximately $8.2 billion to the local economy while providing nearly 25,000 jobs throughout the region. These figures underscore Michelin’s role as a pivotal player in South Carolina’s economic landscape, particularly in the Upstate where the manufacturer has significantly diversified the manufacturing sector.
As of 2024, Michelin operates 15 facilities across South Carolina, with the first plant opening in 1975. This facility began with tire production, and by the end of 1984, it had manufactured about 40 million tires. Michelin’s continued expansion has kept it at the forefront of the automotive industry, innovating solutions for the growing electric vehicle market. Currently, eight out of ten electric vehicle manufacturers in the U.S. utilize Michelin tires.
Matthew Cabe, who will step into the CEO role, has been with Michelin since 2005. Throughout his tenure, he has taken on various leadership positions ranging from engineering to marketing. His experience is anticipated to guide Michelin as it continues to evolve and innovate within the manufacturing sector.
Michelin’s operational success also extends to its significant employment multiplier of 2.6, indicating that for every 10 jobs created directly by Michelin, an additional 16 are generated throughout South Carolina. Jobs attributed directly or indirectly to Michelin offer average incomes that are 45% higher than the state’s average, contributing to the overall financial well-being of the local workforce.
The company is recognized not only for its manufacturing prowess but also for its commitment to community support. Michelin has partnered with the United Way of Greenville County for over 50 years, leading community campaigns that address education, health, and financial stability. For the fifth consecutive year, Michelin was recognized as running the No. 1 Workplace United Way Campaign, demonstrating its continued commitment to social and economic contributions.
Since the decline of textile manufacturing, Michelin has played an integral role in reshaping Greenville’s economic landscape by attracting international investment and creating a robust manufacturing environment. The company has also prioritized sustainability, focusing on initiatives such as water conservation, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable and recycled materials within its manufacturing processes.
As Michelin celebrates this notable anniversary, it highlights its rich history in South Carolina while looking forward to the future under new leadership—one that promises continued growth, innovation, and a commitment to community welfare and sustainability.
