Michelin North America, Inc. celebrated its 50th anniversary in South Carolina, marking a significant milestone for both the company and the state. This event, highlighted by the presence of state and local leaders, took place at Michelin’s corporate headquarters in Greenville on a Tuesday.
During the celebration, Michelin North America CEO Alexis Garcin announced his impending transition to a new role within the company by October 1, 2024, and named Matthew Cabe as his successor. This leadership change underscores the company’s commitment to continuity as it enters its next chapter.
A recent report from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business quantified Michelin’s profound economic impact on the state, revealing that the company has contributed more than $266 billion to the South Carolina economy since its founding in 1974. Additionally, Michelin’s operations inject approximately $8.2 billion into the state’s economy annually, emphasizing its role as a leading employer and economic driver.
Michelin currently employs nearly 24,915 people across South Carolina. This extensive workforce reflects Michelin’s status as one of the largest private employers in the region, contributing significantly to local job markets and regional development.
Michelin’s journey in South Carolina began with the establishment of its first tire manufacturing facility in Greenville in 1975. By the end of 1984, this location had already produced roughly 40 million tires, signaling the company’s early success and its integral role in the local manufacturing landscape. Today, Michelin operates a total of 15 facilities across the state, further establishing its footprint and commitment to the region.
Greenville Mayor Knox White acknowledged Michelin’s transformative impact not only on the local economy but also on the manufacturing industry. As part of ongoing urban development, the city is preparing a billion-dollar redevelopment project for County Square, a 37-acre site deemed vital for the city’s urban environment. This initiative reflects Greenville’s ambition to enhance its infrastructure and public spaces.

The upcoming euphoria2025 food and beverage festival is set to take place from September 18-21, featuring over 80 events and appearances by eight Michelin-starred chefs.
