Florence, South Carolina – McLeod Health in Florence held a nursing awards ceremony on Thursday, recognizing its dedicated staff while concurrently dealing with serious security incidents occurring nearby. The event, organized to honor the exemplary contributions of nursing professionals, took place on the front lawn of the medical tower, with a tent set up to accommodate attendees. Key awards presented during the ceremony included the recognition of Bradley Tyner as Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year, Trena Addison as Registered Nurse of the Year, and Linda McDaniel as Nursing Technician of the Year.

On Wednesday morning, just a day prior to the award event, a shooting incident involving a security officer at McLeod Regional Medical Center occurred. According to Sheriff TJ Joye, the Florence County sheriff’s agency was alerted to the situation but did not respond on-site. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now actively investigating the shooting, which took place near the medical center on East Cheves Street. Details surrounding the incident, including whether there were any injuries resulting from the shooting or a related crash, remain unclear.

In a statement released by McLeod Health, the organization expressed its cooperation with law enforcement and encouraged inquiries regarding the shooting to be directed to SLED.

Additionally, the medical center faced another security challenge when a pharmacist employed by McLeod Health, identified as Mina George Sadek Georgy, was arrested outside the facility. Georgy has been charged with grand larceny, theft from a motor vehicle, and possession of a stolen weapon. The arrest took place after a FLOCK camera alerted police to a vehicle linked with a wanted individual from Richland County. Upon searching Georgy’s vehicle, authorities discovered numerous loose pills and a handgun, which had been reported stolen from a prior incident.

As a result of the arrest, Georgy has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, and McLeod Health has reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with law enforcement in this matter.

The concurrent timing of the nursing awards ceremony and the security incidents reflects a complex situation at McLeod Health. While the institution works to celebrate and recognize the hard work of its nursing staff, the surrounding events serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in ensuring safety within the healthcare environment.

McLeod Health remains a key healthcare provider in the region, offering a wide range of services to the community. The recognition of outstanding nursing professionals at an annual ceremony illustrates the commitment to healthcare excellence, even amidst potential threats to safety. As investigations unfold regarding the shooting and the arrest, the community watches with interest, expecting transparency and updates from relevant law enforcement agencies.

This series of events has raised awareness of both the importance of healthcare professionals in providing critical services, and the necessity for maintaining a safe environment for staff and patients alike. McLeod Health’s actions during this tumultuous time will likely shape its community relations and overall reputation going forward.
