His escape occurred while he was employed at a Bojangles restaurant. Following a swift investigation, he was apprehended at a nearby hotel, and his brother was also arrested for aiding the escape. This incident underscores ongoing concerns about inmate supervision and management of work release programs as authorities reassess their protocols.
Ulysses Steven Conner Jr., a 32-year-old inmate from Florence, South Carolina, was apprehended on Tuesday following his escape from a work program last week. Conner had left his job at a Bojangles restaurant on Thursday evening around 9:30 p.m. while participating in the South Carolina Department of Corrections work program.
Authorities confirmed that Conner was taken into custody at a hotel close to the Charlotte-Douglas Airport in North Carolina. There were no reports of injuries during either the escape or the subsequent capture. Following his arrest, Conner is set to be extradited back to South Carolina where he will face charges related to the escape.
Conner’s escape did not go unnoticed, leading to a swift investigation by local law enforcement. His brother, Roland Leon Miley, aged 37, was arrested on Monday for allegedly aiding Conner by helping to facilitate the escape. Miley faces charges for his involvement in the incident.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of inmate escapes in the region. For example, in a separate incident on August 10 at Eyman State Prison in Arizona, inmate Brigido Montoya escaped briefly in the morning and was recaptured less than an hour later. Montoya is serving a 15-year sentence for sexual conduct with a minor, and during the search for him, three officers experienced heat-related illnesses.
Additionally, on October 14 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, four inmates escaped from the local detention center. Among those were Ky’onne McLeod and De’Shawn Fox, who were recaptured the same day after being unaccounted for for several hours. It was reported that the inmates accessed the outside through an air-conditioning vent. McLeod and Fox currently face charges of trespassing and resisting arrest and remain in the Darlington County Detention Center. Authorities have also charged an unidentified woman for allegedly aiding in their escape.
The incidents highlight ongoing concerns surrounding inmate supervision and the effectiveness of work release programs. As these cases continue to unfold, law enforcement agencies are likely reassessing their protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
In summary, Ulysses Steven Conner Jr. was captured following his escape from a work program after leaving his job at Bojangles. His brother’s involvement in the escape adds another layer to an already concerning pattern of inmate escapes in South Carolina and beyond. The swift actions of law enforcement have led to Conner’s return to custody, but the broader implications regarding prison management remain a topic of discussion in the state.
