MUSC Health Breaks Ground on New Indian Land Hospital

New Construction of MUSC Health Hospital in Indian Land

News Summary

MUSC Health has begun construction on a $300 million medical complex in Indian Land, marking the area’s first hospital. The facility will include advanced care services like kidney transplants and a women’s center, addressing the growing local healthcare needs as the population surges. Adjacent to the hospital, a medical office building will further enhance healthcare access, opening in late 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate the strain on healthcare resources and attract physician talent to South Carolina, aligning with other local healthcare developments.

South Carolina – MUSC Health has officially embarked on a significant construction project for a $300 million medical complex in Indian Land, marking the area’s first hospital. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday morning, attended by approximately 100 civic leaders and professionals from MUSC Health.

The new hospital will be situated at 9258 Charlotte Hwy, strategically located just south of Marvin Road and north of anticipated retail developments including Lowes Foods, Target, and Costco. This facility will be positioned two miles south of the North Carolina state line, along the east side of U.S. 521.

MUSC Health acquired the 84-acre property from the Griffin family in 2020, and construction has made notable progress, with 28 acres cleared for building. However, the remaining land will not be cleared to preserve natural space, as confirmed by the CEO of MUSC Health’s Catawba Division.

Features of the New Hospital

The upcoming hospital will be designed to offer advanced care services, which will include surgeries for kidney transplants, comprehensive cardiology care, an emergency department, and a women’s center catering to maternity services. Patients can also expect innovative medical technologies such as robotic-assisted procedures and a broad range of cancer treatment options, including the opportunity for participation in clinical trials and research.

Medical Office Building Development

Adjacent to the hospital, a 62,000-square-foot medical office building will be constructed to provide specialized services. MUSC Health plans to work alongside local physicians to determine the specific services the office will offer. The medical office building is expected to be completed by late 2025, with an opening slated for early 2027. The hospital itself anticipates completion in late 2027, aiming for an early 2028 opening.

Population Growth and Healthcare Needs

The Indian Land area has witnessed notable growth, with the population increasing from 40,680 in 2020 to 43,048 by mid-2023, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. This surge in population underscores the pressing need for local healthcare services, as many residents currently travel considerable distances for medical care. Research indicates that a staggering 91% of local residents seek medical services outside of South Carolina.

The establishment of this hospital aims to alleviate the strain on healthcare resources by providing essential local services that reduce the necessity for residents to cross state lines for necessary medical attention. In tandem with MUSC Health’s venture, Piedmont Medical Center is also implementing healthcare services in Indian Land, with plans for a freestanding emergency department expected to open by Spring 2026.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps

The new MUSC hospital is poised to fill critical service gaps and enhance the healthcare landscape within one of South Carolina’s rapidly growing regions. The strategic focus of this initiative emphasizes convenient access to advanced medical care for local communities. Moreover, MUSC Health is dedicated to improving overall healthcare through educational initiatives, including the introduction of a new residency program for internal medicine at hospitals in Lancaster County.

The hospital will also differentiate itself from smaller suburban facilities by offering comprehensive cancer care and advanced cardiology services. This initiative aligns with efforts to attract and retain physicians in South Carolina, directly addressing the ongoing shortage of healthcare providers in the state.
