Florence Gears Up for a Day of Celebration and Transformation at Francis Marion University

Florence is buzzing with excitement as Francis Marion University prepares to host its 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. Scheduled for January 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapman Auditorium, this event promises to be a heartfelt homage to the enduring legacy of Dr. King. Partnering with the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, FMU aims to connect students and the community through the arts and education.

A Celebration of Unity and Artistry

The upcoming celebration will showcase an eclectic lineup of performances from talented student artists. This year, Florence Mayor Lethonia Barnes will take center stage as the keynote speaker, bringing her own reflections on Dr. King’s message of hope and unity.

Organizers are particularly prioritizing student involvement this year, affirming the belief that engaging the younger generation is key to spreading Dr. King’s message to the community. By encouraging students to contribute their creativity, FMU aims to create an event that resonates with attendees of all ages.

FMU’s Growth Story: A Campus on the Rise

But that’s not all the good news coming out of FMU! The university is on a roll, expanding its facilities and programs to meet the growing educational needs of the community. The recent renovation of the Smith University Center, a beloved building constructed in 1973, has just wrapped up in December 2023, making it more accessible and vibrant for students and community gatherings.

Meanwhile, a shiny new $23-million School of Business and Education building has opened its doors, marking a significant investment in academic infrastructure. For those interested in hands-on experiences, an Engineering Workshop boasting 4,400 square feet has also been established, dedicated to heavy equipment and design projects, at a cost of $1.37 million.

Innovative Education Programs on the Horizon

FMU isn’t stopping there; they are gearing up to introduce a new Bachelor of Science in Education program specializing in Multi-categorical Special Education, with a focus on Autism Studies, set to launch in the 2024-2025 academic year. Breaking new ground as the very first program of its kind in South Carolina, and just one of two in the Southeastern U.S., this new educational offering represents a collaborative effort across various disciplines, including education, psychology, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy.

Looking even further into the future, FMU plans to break ground in March 2025 on a new Forestry and Environmental Sciences building, which should be ready by December 2026. This facility will welcome new degree programs dedicated to land management, forestry conservation, policy development, and various environmental fields.

Healthcare Advancements in the Pee Dee Region

In addition to these developments, a consortium formed between FMU, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina is aimed at enhancing medical education in the Pee Dee region. The community will soon see the addition of the Dr. C. Edward Floyd Medical Education Consortium Building, thanks to a generous gift of the Circle Park building. Construction for this facility is set to commence in September, creating dedicated spaces for aspiring health sciences students.

This fall, FMU also launched new doctoral programs in Occupational Therapy and Psychology, adding to its growing list of academic offerings. Renovation projects are currently in motion for Founder’s Hall, the McNair, and Leatherman science buildings, with plans for more upgrades to ensure modern facilities for students.

A Bright Future Ahead

As FMU works to broaden its academic footprint while keeping tuition stable, the goal is clear: to respond actively to the evolving workforce needs of the area. With all the exciting plans and celebrations ahead, it’s a wonderful time to be connected to Francis Marion University!
