Swamp Fox Trails (SWFT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and promoting recreational trails in South Carolina, with a focus on enhancing community health, economic development, and outdoor recreation. Founded to spearhead the ambitious Florence to Sumter Rail Trail project, SWFT has played a pivotal role in planning, securing funding, and coordinating stakeholders for multi-phase trail development along abandoned railroad corridors. Their mission is to create sustainable greenways that connect communities, encourage tourism, and promote healthy lifestyles. With a proven track record exemplified by the success of the Greenville Swamp Rabbit Trail, SWFT continually seeks funding opportunities and strategic partnerships to expand trail networks across the region, fostering social and economic benefits for local residents and visitors alike.
Florence and Sumter are set to benefit from a new multimillion-dollar project that will create a 32.1-mile pedestrian and biking trail connecting Florence’s Rail Trail to downtown Sumter. Led by Swamp Fox Trails, the project aims to enhance local transportation and recreation while promoting health and economic growth. The initiative, currently in the feasibility phase, will proceed in four phases with an estimated cost of $46.9 million and is expected to be completed over the next ten years.
Currently in the feasibility phase, the initiative aims to create a greenway along abandoned railroad tracks. The trail will start in Florence and pass through Timmonsville, Lynchburg, and Mayesville before arriving in Sumter. A nonprofit organization known as Swamp Fox Trails (SWFT) is leading the charge for this ambitious project, involving stakeholders from various governmental agencies and community members.
The trail’s development will be executed in four distinct phases:
– Phase 1: Sumter to Mayesville
– Phase 2: Mayesville to Lynchburg
– Phase 3: Lynchburg to Timmonsville
– Phase 4: Timmonsville to Florence
Funding for the trail has already been secured for the master plan, with SWFT planning to pursue additional funding sources, including grants. The project also incorporates a case study that highlights the economic success of the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, which attracted around 750,000 users from 30 states within its first four years. This trail generated a $6.7 million economic impact from a $2.75 million investment between 2009 and 2013, showcasing the potential benefits of developing recreational trails.
The proposed trail is expected to not only boost tourism but also enhance economic development in the towns between Florence and Sumter. In addition to economic benefits, the project is anticipated to promote health and well-being. By providing opportunities for exercise and interaction with nature, the trail aims to contribute positively to the mental and physical health of the community.
The timeline for completing the trail is projected at ten years, with several steps to follow, including public meetings and the engineering design phase. A critical aspect of the project is the feasibility discussions that will need to occur between SWFT and CSX concerning land acquisition and easements, which could influence the project’s progression.
While an official name for the trail has yet to be decided, community discussions include the possibility of incorporating regional nicknames like “Gamecock” and “Swamp Fox,” nodding to important figures from the Revolutionary War.
Meanwhile, an extension of the existing Florence Rail Trail is projected to open in May 2025. This extension will link Ebenezer Road to the Florence Soccer Complex and add approximately 2.5 miles to the existing routes, which already total over 20 miles. The estimated cost for this extension is around $1 million, and it has come in under budget by about $50,000.
The city of Florence is committed to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through these improved recreational amenities. Such endeavors may also play a significant role in attracting new residents and employees looking for better lifestyle options in the area. In line with future expansions, there is also a plan for a 3-4 mile trail addition at High Hill Creek Park, further demonstrating the city’s ambition for extensive outdoor recreational infrastructure.
Overall, the Florence to Sumter Rail Trail project is positioned to become an essential asset for the region, supporting economic growth, public health, and recreation for years to come.
