Florence – The Florence Post 1 Junior AAA Legion team has secured a spot in the state tournament following a closely contested 5-4 victory over St. George. This win marks a significant achievement for Post 1, adding to their impressive legacy of 17 consecutive league crowns in South Carolina American Legion Baseball.
Coach Derick Urquhart expressed enthusiasm regarding the team’s performance and emphasized the importance of valuing their accomplishments. The victory against St. George is part of Post 1’s ongoing success in the league, which includes multiple state tournament qualifications since 2012 and a total of six state championships. Florence Post 1 has also demonstrated prowess on a national level, achieving two World Series berths, with standout player Brody Cook receiving the co-Slugger Award and being named all-tournament during the 2023 World Series.
The recent win allows Post 1 to retain their homefield advantage in the upcoming state tournament as the No. 1 seed. Coach Urquhart aims for his team to win the state championship every year, viewing any additional accolades as bonuses to their already impressive track record.
Prior to their win against St. George, Florence clinched the league championship with an 8-4 victory over Sumter Post 15. In that match, the team showcased their batting power with a total of 11 hits, including doubles from Kason Herlong and Cooper Coleman. Web Barnes also made a notable contribution, driving in two runs during the game. The winning pitcher for Florence was Brandon Anderson, who excelled on the mound by pitching five innings, striking out four batters, and allowing only two earned runs.
Additionally, Florence has a pending league game scheduled against Horry Post 111, who recently recorded a 17-9 victory over Sumter. Coach Urquhart has emphasized the significance of treating the upcoming game seriously, as maintaining momentum is crucial leading into the state tournament.
The playoffs for the state tournament are scheduled to commence on July 21, with Florence hosting Game 1 of a best-of-3 series. The tournament itself is set to begin on July 25, where the higher seed will have the advantage of hosting the first two nights of action. Following a day off, additional games will be played, culminating in the final two days of the tournament at the University of South Carolina’s Founders Park on July 30 and 31.
