With only one game standing between them and being ousted from the tournament, the team must beat Greenville Post 3 in their next match. Florence’s struggles in capitalizing on scoring opportunities and a few critical pitching challenges were evident in the game against Richland. Coach Derick Urquhart emphasizes the need for focus and execution as they aim to keep their championship hopes alive.
Florence, SC – Florence Post 1, the top seed in the American Legion state tournament, is on the brink of elimination after suffering a narrow 7-6 defeat against Richland in the second round. The loss means that Florence is now one game away from being ousted from the tournament, as they prepare to face Greenville Post 3 at 4 p.m. on Monday at Lexington High School.
The upcoming match against Greenville is crucial, as the winner will move on to the next round, scheduled for Wednesday at the University of South Carolina’s Founders Park. With their backs against the wall, Florence aims to secure a victory to keep their championship hopes alive.
During the encounter with Richland, Florence showcased several offensive opportunities but failed to capitalize on them, loading the bases in the first, second (twice), sixth, and seventh innings. Despite this, they could only score three runs. Richland managed to take a commanding lead, 7-3, by the sixth inning, fueled by a four-run surge during that frame.
A pivotal moment in the game came when Richland’s right fielder executed a dramatic diving catch of a fly ball, halting a potential Florence rally. Florence made a spirited attempt in the bottom of the seventh, with Kason Herlong drawing a walk to score a run and Cooper Coleman hitting a two-run single that narrowed Richland’s lead to just one run at 7-6. However, the momentum shifted once more when Brody Cook hit into a fielder’s choice and Web Barnes popped out to the shortstop, sealing the game in favor of Richland.
Florence’s pitching strategy faced complications as their starting pitcher, Brandon Anderson, was replaced in the fourth inning following struggles on the mound. Colby Richardson, the team’s ace, entered and pitched for 1 1/3 innings, effectively navigating a bases-loaded situation. However, Kason Herlong’s performance in the sixth saw him give up two walks and hit a batter, which proved detrimental to Florence’s defense against Richland’s aggressive batting.
Coach Derick Urquhart noted several offensive lapses within the team, including an inability to execute bunts—Florence went 0 for 5 in sacrifice attempts. Early in the game, the team appeared to have momentum, scoring three runs in the initial innings, but this did not carry through as they struggled to maintain their offensive output. Urquhart has stressed the importance of focusing on executing plays effectively and seizing key moments to propel the team forward in the tournament.
This recent loss has left the players and coaching staff reflecting on earlier struggles faced throughout the season, particularly in leaving runners stranded on base. With a current season record of 24-3, Florence Post 1 must now concentrate on winning four consecutive games to keep their championship aspirations alive and achieve a turnaround from this challenging defeat.
As the next game approaches, the focus for Florence Post 1 shifts to overcoming their prior mistakes, refining their offensive strategies, and executing plays with precision to secure their spot in the tournament.
