Despite solid contributions from players, including doubles from Tim Dickinson and Tanner Donati, the team struggled on the mound. The team is determined to improve their standings as the season progresses.
Florence – The Florence Flamingos faced a challenging defeat against the Holly Springs squad on Friday night, losing with a score of 11-6 at Carolina Bank Field. This loss brought the Flamingos’ overall season record to 13 wins and 21 losses.
The game featured strong performances from several players on the Flamingos roster. Four players contributed significantly to the team’s offense, each hitting doubles. Tim Dickinson and Tanner Donati both recorded two hits, and Gavin Johnson and Stow Rogers also achieved two hits each throughout the game. Notably, Colby Thorndyke ended the game with a solid batting record of 2 for 5, contributing two runs batted in (RBIs). Teammate Anthony Quigley also shared a highlight by securing one hit in five at-bats, along with two RBIs.
Despite the offensive efforts, Clayton Sherwood took the loss for the Flamingos, marking a tough night on the pitching mound. Following the game, the team is set to host the Macon squad today at 7 p.m., offering them an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the recent defeat.
The Flamingos faced additional challenges earlier in the week, including a previous 7-2 defeat against Asheboro at home. In a more positive note, the day before the loss to Holly Springs, the Flamingos split a doubleheader against Lexington County. They triumphed in the first game with a commanding 15-3 victory, during which Tanner Donati made headlines with two grand slams while teammate Anthony Quigley also contributed a home run. Other players made notable contributions, including Josh Williams, who went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI, while both Samuel Fischer and Enrique Alvarez recorded three hits each during the game.
However, the Flamingos could not replicate their success in the second game of the doubleheader, suffering a close 1-0 loss with Derek Devos tagged as the losing pitcher.
In a separate notable event, the stadium was the scene of a recent burglary, prompting immediate police response aided by drone surveillance. Officers were able to apprehend two minor suspects on charges of second-degree burglary and criminal conspiracy as they attempted to flee the Carolina Bank Stadium after hours. A third suspect is still being sought by authorities following the incident.
Additionally, the Flamingos faced Florence Post 1 in an exhibition game, where they again encountered defeat, losing with a score of 8-7. The exhibition showcased high school talent against the college-level Flamingos, with standout performances from Cooper Coleman, who celebrated an RBI double for Post 1, and Kason Herlong, who went 3 for 4, scoring three runs. The winning pitcher for Post 1 was Daniel Parker, who struck out five batters in three innings of play, with Brandon Anderson coming in as a closer, securing a save while striking out one batter in 1 2/3 innings.
As the season progresses, the Flamingos will look to improve their standing and gain momentum with upcoming games, starting with the matchup against Macon tonight.
