Florence County, South Carolina, experienced a harrowing standoff that ended tragically when the suspect took his own life after releasing hostages. The incident unfolded on Savannah Grove Road in Effingham and lasted for several hours, drawing in the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement.
Negotiators spent considerable time communicating with the suspect in an attempt to resolve the standoff peacefully. During this time, the suspect successfully released hostages, but despite ongoing negotiations, he ultimately refused to exit the home. As deputies prepared to force entry in a last-ditch effort to bring the situation to a close, the suspect tragically ended his own life. The Sheriff’s Office has not released further details regarding the initial shooting incident that prompted the standoff.
Authorities have indicated that more information will be released as investigations continue. Meanwhile, local news outlets are committed to providing updates on the situation.
In a separate but related incident, law enforcement took two suspects into custody at a Florence home on the same day. One of the suspects, Tiffany Prentice Cooper, aged 37, has a significant criminal history, having been previously sentenced to 10 years in relation to drug offenses, including distributing methamphetamine and narcotic drugs. She was granted a split sentence, serving four years with the remainder on probation. A warrant had been issued for her arrest after she failed to appear in court.
Cooper exited the residence after police deployed multiple rounds of CS gas, leading to her arrest. She now faces additional charges, including resisting arrest and aggravated breach of peace.
The second suspect, John Smith, aged 38, has a record of probation violations, having been sentenced to probation for second-degree domestic violence. He too had multiple warrants issued for his arrest due to missed check-ins with probation officers and drug use. Smith was listed in the National Crime Information Center, making him a person of interest for law enforcement. He was involved in a separate armed standoff for approximately four hours before being taken into custody.
Both Cooper and Smith are currently in Florence County jail, facing a range of charges stemming from their respective incidents.
In unrelated news, former Florence County Deputy Treyvon Sellers is facing charges related to a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 26. The suspect in this shooting, William Dwayne Rankin, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. Sellers faces serious charges including voluntary manslaughter, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and misconduct in office.
The incident began after Sellers pursued Rankin into a residence off National Cemetery Road, where it is alleged that Sellers shot him multiple times. During this altercation, an uninvolved homeowner was also injured by Sellers’ police dog. Following the shooting, Sellers was placed on administrative leave and was later terminated as part of a domestic violence investigation.
The bond hearing for Sellers is currently scheduled, with both prosecution and defense offering conflicting narratives concerning the events leading to the shooting. Notably, Sellers has no prior criminal record and has served in law enforcement for five years. He is a father of four.
As both local and county authorities navigate these complex situations, the communities affected will be awaiting further developments and responses from law enforcement.
