The incident arose from a verbal altercation, and investigators anticipate more arrests as the case develops. The tragic loss of Wright, a student in the Florence School District, has deeply affected the local community, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence.
Florence County authorities have arrested Devan Scott Raper, a 19-year-old resident of Conway, on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. This arrest follows the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright in the Johnsonville community shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
The shooting occurred on North First Neck Road, where Wright was found lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. Initial reports indicate that Wright sustained two gunshot wounds to the lower chest and was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
According to Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye, the incident was triggered by a verbal altercation between Raper and Wright. Raper was subsequently booked into the Florence County Detention Center and had a court appearance on Thursday. During the hearing, a judge denied bond for Raper, and he is scheduled for another court appearance in General Sessions court on August 19.
Investigators have indicated that further arrests in connection with the case may be forthcoming as the investigation continues. Forensic evidence and witness statements are likely being gathered to build a stronger case.
This is not Raper’s first encounter with law enforcement. He previously faced accessory charges related to a shooting incident that occurred on August 15, 2024. However, those charges were dropped due to a lack of cooperation from witnesses, suggesting that Raper has a background that complicates his current legal situation.
Trey Wright was a student enrolled in Florence School District 5 and worked at Vox Deer Processing. The loss of the young teen has had a profound impact on his community, with Vox Deer Processing expressing significant grief over his passing. They described Wright as a cherished member of the community.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking any information related to the shooting and encourages individuals with knowledge of the event to contact them at 843-665-2121. It is hoped that community cooperation will assist in advancing the investigation and providing justice for the victim and his family.
The incident highlights the serious nature of gun violence affecting communities. As the investigation unfolds, community members are facing the sobering reality of youthful lives lost and the ongoing impact it has on families and neighborhoods.
The arrest of Devan Scott Raper marks a significant step in addressing this tragic incident, but the implications will ripple through the Johnsonville community for weeks and months to come. As the case progresses, further developments are anticipated, particularly with the scheduled court appearances and the potential for additional arrests.
