Residents have described the situation as unsafe, emphasizing that the road’s declining condition has persisted for years without adequate intervention from local authorities. Despite numerous complaints directed to the DOT, residents have reported only minimal responses, frequently involving temporary fixes that fail to offer a long-term solution.

Recently, a local resident submitted a complaint about the major pothole, and the DOT responded affirmatively, stating they would assess it on the following Wednesday. However, when a representative from the DOT visited the area, they did not address the large pothole, which left residents bewildered and disheartened. Community members have noted that while smaller potholes were patched, the most dangerous and prominent issues remained unattended.

The frustration among the residents escalates particularly in light of the fact that surrounding roads have recently been repaved. Residents compared their plight to the repaving of other roads nearby, noting that it seemed unjust when those roads were prioritized over Flowers Road. Many had expectations that after the completion of the Pamplico Highway improvements, their road would also see attention and resurfacing. However, the reality has been starkly different, with Flowers Road remaining untouched.

This sentiment is compounded by a referendum approved by voters in 2006 to widen several roads in Florence County, including Pamplico Highway. The promise of improved infrastructure remains unfulfilled for residents on Flowers Road as construction delays have prolonged the timeframe for repairs and resurfacing.

As it stands, the only ongoing road repairs noted by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in Florence County include State Road 21-57 and West Palmetto Street. The absence of maintenance on Flowers Road has left residents feeling neglected as they continue to face daily challenges due to the deteriorated road conditions.

Although residents regularly report their concerns and seek support for repair efforts, responses from the DOT have not been forthcoming or satisfactory. The pattern of delayed action and temporary solutions has caused a deep sense of frustration within the community, as they feel their voices are not being heard. As the conditions on Flowers Road worsen, the calls for meaningful action and commitment to infrastructure improvement grow louder, reflecting an urgent need for long-term solutions.
