Florence County was shaken early Sunday morning when a shooting at Qulture Bistro resulted in the death of a security guard and left several others injured. The tragic incident occurred just before 4 a.m., claiming the life of Melvin Anthony Gibson, 39, who was working to protect patrons at the nightclub.
According to law enforcement, the violence erupted after a disturbance inside the venue. A group with previous issues with Gibson attempted to enter Qulture Bistro but was denied access by the security guard. Frustrated, this group reportedly returned to the parking lot, retrieved three weapons, and initiated a shootout with Gibson. Tragically, during the altercation, Gibson was fatally shot.
In addition to Gibson, six other individuals were shot during the incident. While some were involved in the confrontation, others were innocent bystanders. Fortunately, all of the injured are expected to recover, as confirmed by Sheriff TJ Joye.
This shooting marks the second violent incident within Florence County in just 24 hours. The previous incident took place at a different nightclub and left one person in critical condition. Local authorities are anticipating charges against those involved in both shooting incidents.
In a separate incident, law enforcement arrested two individuals, Daquan Markel Brown, 24, and Eugene Travis McClease Jr., 17, who were involved in a shooting at a fast food restaurant where gunfire was exchanged.
In light of the recent uptick in violence, Sheriff Joye has condemned the situation as unacceptable. He has stated that measures will be taken to enhance community safety, which may include the revocation of alcohol licenses from establishments known for violent incidents.
The sheriff’s office is thoroughly investigating both the nightclub shooting and the earlier incident, as deputies were also called to two unrelated shootings over the same weekend. The investigation seeks to provide justice for the victims and restore a sense of safety in the community.
As the community mourns the loss of Melvin Gibson, he is remembered by family and friends as a loving father of four, a dedicated worker, and a person known for his kindness. An autopsy for Gibson has been scheduled for Thursday morning, and his family is awaiting further details while dealing with their grief.
As Florence County grapples with the aftermath of this tragic shooting, the emphasis on community safety and justice for victims remains a top priority for local law enforcement. Sheriff Joye continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
