Florence County Deputy Nathaniel “Nate” Ansay, 24, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Olanta Highway on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. near Blackwells Farm Road on U.S. Highway 301 while Ansay was on duty.

Major Michael M. Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy’s death following the head-on collision. Both Deputy Ansay’s vehicle, which was traveling north, and a GMC SUV, traveling south, were involved in the crash. Following the collision, both individuals were transported to an area hospital, where Deputy Ansay succumbed to his injuries.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. As details are still unfolding, funeral arrangements for Ansay are yet to be finalized, with further information expected to be released in the near future.

Deputy Ansay joined the Florence County Sheriff’s Office on October 30, 2023, and was a recent graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, becoming a Class 1 officer on March 15, 2024. Colleagues and community members alike remember Ansay as a dedicated officer with a contagious positive attitude. During a recent conversation at a fellow officer’s funeral, he expressed his passion for law enforcement and his commitment to serving the community.

In honor of his service and sacrifice, flags are currently flying at half-staff at the Florence County Law Enforcement Complex. The tragedy of his passing has reverberated throughout the law enforcement community and the wider Florence County area, eliciting an outpouring of condolences and support from various law enforcement agencies across the Pee Dee and Grand Strand regions.

Many local police departments and sheriff’s offices, including those from Darlington County and Georgetown County, have extended their sympathies to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and to Ansay’s grieving family. Governor Henry McMaster along with several politicians, including U.S. Representative Russell Fry, have also shared heartfelt condolences, recognizing Ansay’s service and dedication to the community.

The loss of Deputy Ansay is felt deeply among the members of the community he served, impacting not just his family and friends, but his colleagues within the sheriff’s office and the greater Florence County area. Sheriff T.J. Joye reflected on Ansay’s character, noting that he was someone who never met a stranger and always greeted others with a huge smile. Such sentiments underline the remarkable impression he made in his short time in the force.

This tragic event has brought together community members and law enforcement personnel, uniting them in a shared experience of grief and remembrance for a young life dedicated to public service.
