The Florence County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of Deputy Nathaniel ‘Nate’ Ansay, who was laid to rest following a fatal on-duty crash. The funeral service held at the Florence Baptist Temple was attended by law enforcement officers from various counties, reflecting the tight-knit support of the policing community. Deputy Ansay was remembered for his positive impact on the community and dedication to mentoring youth in the South Florence High School bass fishing team. Counseling services will be provided for grieving staff, and a memorial will be established in his honor.

Florence – Deputy Nathaniel “Nate” Ansay, a 24-year-old officer with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, was laid to rest on May 22 following a fatal crash that occurred while he was on duty on Olanta Highway two days earlier. Major Michael M. Nunn from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Deputy Ansay’s untimely death in a statement.

The funeral service was held at the Florence Baptist Temple and began with a visitation at 1:00 p.m., followed by a burial service at 3:00 p.m. at the Florence Memorial Gardens. Attendees included law enforcement officers from surrounding counties, such as Horry and Charleston, who came to support their fellow deputies.

A solemn procession of blue lights and patrol cars escorted Deputy Ansay’s hearse to the funeral service, with an American flag draped from fire trucks at the church entrance signifying the loss of a brave officer. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott along with several deputies attended the service, expressing solidarity with Sheriff T.J. Joye and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time.

Many in attendance reflected on Deputy Ansay’s character and contributions. Beverly Dennis, a family friend, shared her pride in his accomplishments, noting the positive impact he had on the lives of those around him. Deputy Ansay was also recognized as the Assistant Captain of the South Florence High School bass fishing team, where he inspired many students and served as a mentor.

As part of the broader response to the loss, neighboring counties, including Darlington County, provided coverage assistance for the Florence County deputies so they could attend the funeral, illustrating the support from the law enforcement community. The service reached full capacity, with attendees including officers from as far away as Tennessee, demonstrating the extensive reach of Deputy Ansay’s influence and the respect he garnered among his peers.

Speaking about Deputy Ansay’s impact, his cousin, Brianna Streett, highlighted his vibrant personality and the growth he displayed despite a challenging upbringing. Sheriff T.J. Joye emphasized the importance of unity in the wake of tragedy, reflecting on the preciousness of life and the community’s need to come together to support those affected.

To help those who are grieving, counseling services are being provided to the staff members impacted by Deputy Ansay’s tragic death. In honor of the fallen officer, plans are underway to establish a permanent memorial that will serve as a tribute to his service and dedication.

Deputy Ansay is survived by his parents, longtime girlfriend, siblings, and cousins, all of whom grieve the loss of a beloved member of their family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the South Florence High School Bass Fishing Team at 3200 South Irby St. in Florence as a way to continue his legacy of inspiring young people and fostering their love for the sport.
