Florence County held an impactful back-to-school giveaway event on Sunday, aimed at preparing local students for the upcoming academic year. The event, which took place at the Levy Park Community Center, successfully distributed over 250 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to local children. More than 300 children and their families attended, highlighting the community’s need for educational resources.
Local entrepreneurs played a critical role in contributing to the event, ensuring that students had the necessary tools to feel both prepared and proud as they head back to school. The organizer of the event emphasized the significant impact of community support, especially for families who may struggle with acquiring these supplies.
In addition to the school supplies, children attending the event received complimentary haircuts and hair braiding. Families were also provided with hot dogs and snacks to take home, further enhancing the appeal of the event. Organizers expressed a strong desire for this giveaway to transform into an annual tradition, emphasizing the ongoing support needed by families within the community.
The back-to-school giveaway was part of a larger initiative led by various local organizations, including a school supply drive organized in collaboration with Ortho SC and the Salvation Army. This drive aimed to collect donations for students and staff at schools in several districts, including Horry County Schools, Florence County School District 2, and both Dillon County District 3 and Dillon County District 4. The drive concluded on Monday, with donation collection efforts being conducted at Office Max in Myrtle Beach.
The importance of supporting students for a successful school year was highlighted by the efforts of community leaders involved in organizing the supply drive. The idea is to foster an environment where every student is equipped with the necessary supplies to excel academically.
In addition to the Florence County event, the Florence Christian Church is hosting a yard sale on July 28, targeted to benefit students in Boone County. Proceeds from the yard sale will be allocated to purchasing school supplies for these students. For over 20 years, the church has been dedicated to supporting Boone County students through its Annual School Supply Drive, which aims to ensure that all children can begin the school year with adequate resources.
The church collaborates with school resource coordinators to identify the specific needs of students, ensuring that their support is both targeted and effective. A volunteer for the church stated that the initiative is about making students feel valued and supported as they embark on their educational journeys.
Community members are encouraged to contribute to the yard sale by donating items. Any leftover items from the sale will be donated to local nonprofit organizations or to the church’s Shower Ministry, thereby extending the benefits of the community’s generosity beyond the yard sale itself.
Both of these initiatives, the back-to-school giveaway in Florence County and the yard sale for Boone County students, reflect a strong commitment from local organizations and volunteers to ensure that all students have access to the supplies and resources necessary for a successful school year.
