A serious accident on I-95 in Florence County resulted in the death of one driver and injuries to a teenager early Monday morning. The crash occurred near mile marker 163 just before 6 a.m. and involved a collision between a Peterbilt car hauler and a Honda sedan.
According to investigators, the Honda sedan attempted to overtake the car hauler when it struck the trailer of the larger vehicle. This collision caused the car hauler to veer off the road and flip over. Tragically, the driver of the Honda sedan did not survive the accident. A 14-year-old passenger who was also in the Honda sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the driver of the Peterbilt car hauler was unharmed in the incident.
The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released by the Florence County Coroner’s Office as officials continue their investigation. The crash resulted in significant traffic disruptions on I-95, leading to parts of the highway being closed for an extended period while authorities conducted investigation and cleanup operations.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the South Carolina Highway Patrol, West Florence Fire-Rescue, Florence County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. These teams worked collaboratively to manage the aftermath of the crash and ensure roadway safety.
Accidents involving large commercial vehicles, such as car haulers, are unfortunately not uncommon, particularly on busy highways. Authorities emphasize the importance of safe driving practices, especially when maneuvering around larger vehicles. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident. This includes examining traffic patterns, vehicle conditions, and if any traffic laws were violated during the incident. As the investigation continues, more details may emerge regarding the actions leading up to the tragedy.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), accidents involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks can result in serious injuries and fatalities. The data underscores the critical need for heightened awareness and adherence to traffic safety regulations, especially on busy highways like I-95.
