Florence County

A 59-year-old tractor-trailer driver died in a collision with an SUV on Highway 378 on Monday morning. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 378 and Park Avenue, located west of Lake City.

The deceased driver, identified as Calvin Hilton from the Manning area, was operating a 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer loaded with logs. Initial reports indicate that Hilton swerved to avoid another vehicle that had crossed in front of him, resulting in a crash with a 2010 Volvo SUV that was in the process of turning onto Highway 378 from Park Avenue.

The driver of the SUV was traveling north on Park Avenue at the time of the accident. Following the impact, Hilton’s truck veered off the right side of the road and entered a wooded area. Although the SUV driver sustained minor injuries, they have not been publicly identified as of this time.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, with Cpl. David Jones providing confirmation of the details surrounding the incident. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet released additional information regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash.

This tragic incident underscores the ongoing issue of road safety and the dangers associated with large vehicles on highways. Tractor-trailers are notoriously difficult to maneuver and stop quickly due to their size and weight, and accidents involving them can often result in severe consequences.

Officials urge drivers to remain vigilant and cautious while navigating near heavy trucks to prevent similar tragedies. The community is mourning the loss of Calvin Hilton, and support is being offered to those affected by this accident.

The incident remains a developing story as further details emerge from the ongoing investigation by local law enforcement authorities.
