Florence, South Carolina – A tragic car crash on Friday evening has resulted in the death of a 44-year-old woman, Oshunda Tomoko Quillin, from Florence. The accident occurred at approximately 8:52 p.m. at the intersection of Firetower Road and Highway 76 East, when a minivan collided with the sedan in which Quillin was a passenger.

Quillin was traveling north on Firetower Road in a 2014 Chevrolet sedan that was attempting to cross Highway 76 when it was struck by a 2024 Toyota minivan heading east. Following the incident, Quillin sustained serious injuries and was subsequently taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries the following day, July 15, 2025, at 4:33 p.m.

The driver of the Chevrolet sedan was also hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash, while the driver of the minivan, the sole occupant of that vehicle, was unharmed. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) has indicated that charges of felony DUI will be brought against the driver of the Chevrolet sedan. Further details regarding the identity of the driver are currently being withheld as the investigation progresses.

An autopsy for Quillin is scheduled to take place within the week at the Medical University of South Carolina. The SCHP has initiated a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, aiming to gather more information from all individuals involved and any potential witnesses.

Quillin’s brother, Akiem Johnson, has raised concerns regarding the investigation process. He has indicated that several witnesses to the crash have attempted to share their accounts and observations but were unable to speak to troopers present at the scene. Instead, these individuals have reached out to Johnson, who is now advocating for a comprehensive and transparent examination of the incident. Johnson emphasized the family’s desire for clarity, especially following the recent loss of their mother.

The intersection where the crash occurred is known to have heavy traffic, and it is not yet clear what factors may have contributed to this tragic accident. The SCHP is appealing to the public for any information related to the crash. Individuals who witnessed the event or have additional knowledge are encouraged to come forward and assist investigators in piecing together the details.

Traffic safety is a pressing concern in South Carolina, especially as the state has seen an uptick in serious accidents in recent years. The SCHP has been working diligently to address the issue through various safety initiatives aimed at reducing accidents and promoting safer driving behaviors on the roads.

Community members, including Quillin’s family, are left to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event. Many are calling for increased safety measures at the intersection where the crash occurred, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Stakeholders in the community are reminded of the importance of road safety awareness and the need for responsible driving to keep all road users safe. As the investigation continues, the SCHP is committed to uncovering the facts surrounding this incident to ensure that justice is served and to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about improving traffic safety in the region.

In summary, the tragic death of Oshunda Tomoko Quillin serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities faced on the roadways. As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial for the community to rally together, share information, and work towards safer streets for all.
