Florence County, S.C. – A community mourns the loss of 33-year-old EMT Amber Hickson, who tragically died in a car crash on December 19, 2022. The accident occurred along Olanta Highway and involved a collision between Hickson’s 2019 Kia Sorento and a 2004 Buick Rainier. Local coroner Keith von Lutcken confirmed that Hickson succumbed to her injuries from the crash.
Amber Hickson, who worked diligently with AMR Transport and Pamplico Rescue, was remembered as a dedicated and caring person who devoted her life to helping others. In the aftermath of her passing, Hickson’s mother, Roberta Reynolds, along with Hickson’s 7-year-old son, initiated a heartfelt tribute by establishing a blessing box at the site of the accident. This blessing box is intended to provide essentials and goodies for individuals in need, and it features a picture of Hickson, symbolizing her spirit of generosity.
Hickson’s husband and son survived the harrowing accident, which has left a profound impact on their family and friends. Childhood friends of Hickson, Morrison and Buddin, expressed their heartbreak over her loss and have committed to supporting Hickson’s son, whom they affectionately described as her “mini me.” A Go Fund Me account has been created to assist the family during this challenging time.
Ambers’s funeral service was held on December 23, 2022, at Floyd Funeral Home, with burial taking place at Matthews Cemetery. The emotional ceremony was attended by family, friends, and community members who gathered to honor her memory.
In a continued effort to memorialize Amber and promote safe driving, her mother reached out to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to request a highway sign in her memory. The sign, which reads “Drive Safely In Memory of EMT Amber Hickson,” has been erected alongside the road, serving as a solemn reminder of the need for caution and responsibility while driving. The area surrounding the sign has been decorated with balloons and flowers as a tribute to Hickson.
Roberta Reynolds hopes that the presence of the sign will not only honor her daughter but also raise awareness about road safety, thereby preventing other families from enduring similar tragedies. The community continues to come together in remembrance of Amber Hickson, whose legacy of compassion and selflessness will endure in their hearts.
