Sponsor Our ArticlesTim Pearson has been appointed the new president of Duke Energy in South Carolina, overseeing financial performance and community engagement for the utility. With a background in government affairs and public policy, Pearson aims to drive sustainable energy initiatives while addressing local energy needs. Duke Energy is committed to enhancing energy resilience and community service, particularly as the state navigates new legislative proposals and challenges in energy management.
South Carolina has a new leader at the helm of Duke Energy’s operations. Tim Pearson has been appointed as the president of the utility company in the state, taking on responsibilities that include overseeing the financial performance of Duke Energy’s regulated utilities, engaging with local and state regulatory bodies, and managing community affairs. Pearson will oversee the delivery of services to approximately 835,500 electric retail customers and 164,000 natural gas customers in South Carolina.
Tim Pearson, who previously served as the vice president of government affairs for Duke Energy, joined the organization full-time in 2023 after a wealth of experience working as an adviser and consultant. His background includes over ten years in government and public policy within the state, having served in significant roles including chief of staff for former Governor Nikki Haley and providing campaign assistance for Governor Henry McMaster during his 2018 and 2022 election campaigns. Pearson currently resides in Columbia with his wife Ashton and their two children.
In his new role, Pearson is tasked not only with ensuring the company’s financial health but also with directing legislative initiatives that align with the company’s goals for sustainable energy development. Duke Energy is committed to powering the economic vitality of local communities while delivering reliable and affordable energy. This commitment comes amid growing discussions on South Carolina’s energy future, particularly in light of House Bill 3309, which seeks to address new generation needs. Duke Energy supports this legislative proposal, emphasizing the importance of energy source diversity for economic growth.
To further its energy strategy, Duke Energy employs an “all of the above” approach that integrates renewable resources alongside hydrogen-capable gas systems and aims to extend the lifespan of existing nuclear facilities. The company has also implemented self-healing technology that has successfully averted over 1.1 million customer outages in 2024, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the resilience of the energy grid against extreme weather conditions.
As the state prepares for winter weather, Duke Energy is advising customers to have plans in place for potential outages. The company encourages the community to participate in energy efficiency programs designed to help manage energy usage during colder months. These initiatives include free energy assessments and rebate programs aimed at improving household energy efficiency.
Duke Energy remains dedicated to its community involvement through the Duke Energy Foundation, which has allocated more than $2 million since 2021 to combat hunger in South Carolina. The company actively responds to emergencies, having coordinated responses during crises such as natural disasters and the pandemic. Their staff clocked over 4,500 hours in volunteer service last year to address various community needs.
The power utility’s proactive response to natural disasters, including Hurricane Helene, showcases its commitment to improving the energy delivery system and ensuring swift power restoration efforts. This includes extensive coordination and support from various partners during emergencies, demonstrating the company’s dedication to ongoing infrastructure investments that will enhance system resiliency.
Tim Pearson’s leadership comes at a crucial time for Duke Energy as South Carolina’s needs evolve and the conversation around future energy solutions develops. His extensive background in government leadership and policy will aid in navigating the complex regulatory landscape while ensuring that Duke Energy continues to serve the state effectively and responsibly.
