South Carolina

Duke Energy has announced the allocation of $200,000 in grants designated for organizations in South Carolina that support the aging population. The funding aims to facilitate infrastructure improvements, enabling these organizations to enhance services for seniors, particularly those facing economic hardships.

The initiative underlines the vital role of supporting seniors who have significantly contributed to the community’s growth. Each selected organization will receive a grant of $10,000 to implement their proposed projects. Notable recipients include Meals on Wheels – Anderson, which plans to use funds to deliver 1,428 meals to seniors in need, helping address food security issues in the community.

In addition to Meals on Wheels, the grant will assist the United Way of Sumter, Lee and Clarendon Counties in constructing wheelchair ramps for seniors. This development is expected to enhance the mobility of elderly residents, providing them better access to essential services and fostering greater independence.

The recipients were chosen following a request for proposals that was released in January 2025, highlighting the company’s commitment to engaging local organizations that address pressing needs among aging residents.

This recent funding comes on the heels of similar efforts in previous years. In 2023, Duke Energy provided grants of up to $20,000 to 15 qualifying nonprofits specifically focused on home repairs for senior citizens, aiming to improve living conditions. Furthermore, in 2024, the Duke Energy Foundation allocated an additional $100,000 to support 13 organizations that already had existing ramp programs catering to low-income seniors or individuals with disabilities.

Duke Energy’s philanthropic initiative is part of a broader commitment to community support, with the foundation donating over $30 million annually to various communities served by the utility provider. The company operates electric and natural gas utilities across multiple states and is dedicated to serving millions of customers.

In addition to its community support, Duke Energy is also actively engaged in environmental sustainability initiatives. The company is focused on transitioning to clean energy solutions, with ambitious targets established to achieve net-zero methane emissions from its natural gas business by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions from electricity generation by 2050. These objectives reflect the company’s commitment to balancing community needs with environmental responsibilities.
