Florence, South Carolina, was alive with energy on Saturday as Francis Marion University hosted its annual Arts International Festival in downtown Florence. Hundreds of community members descended upon South Dargan Street to participate in a vibrant celebration of international art, music, food, and culture, all free and open to the public.

The festival transformed South Dargan Street, which was blocked off to accommodate attendees eager to experience the array of cultural displays. Participants enjoyed a colorful spectacle of international dance presentations that honored Mexican indigenous heritage and explored Afro-Latin culture. Local international students also took part in the event, sharing insights about their home countries and enriching the experience for visitors.

Among the participants was Mohamed Kamate from Mali, who contributed to the festival by helping educate the community about his cultural background. Nawang Wardhana from Indonesia also participated, noting the eye-opening benefits of her experience as a foreign exchange student in promoting intercultural exchange. This involvement highlighted the festival’s commitment to fostering understanding and appreciation of global cultures within the local community.

In addition to dance and cultural education, local artists showcased their arts and crafts under tents arranged throughout the venue. These displays offered visitors a chance to purchase unique pieces while supporting the local arts community. One participant, Carol Black-Lemon, a fine art painter known for her work in Afrocentrism, appreciated the platform the festival provided for emerging artists in the area, noting its significance in allowing local talent to shine.

The festival, held outside the FMU performing arts center, concluded at 4 p.m. Attendees enjoyed favorable weather conditions, with a high of 87°F and mostly sunny skies, although some afternoon clouds rolled in. Notably, winds reached over 40 mph, adding a brisk element to the enjoyable day.
