Florence, South Carolina – Clemson University is set to host its annual Corn and Soybean Field Days in 2025, presenting a valuable opportunity for local agricultural producers to engage with current research and best practices. The first event will take place on July 22 at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center (REC) near Florence, while the second will follow on July 24 at the Edisto REC near Blackville. Both events will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and include lunch for attendees.
Field day participants will engage in discussions led by scientists on various topics including agronomics, nutrient management, pest control, and insect and nematode sampling. Michael Plumblee, a corn and soybean specialist at Clemson University Extension, has coordinated the events with the intent of enabling producers to access research findings pertinent to both major row crop regions of South Carolina.
The field days aim to foster connections between producers and ongoing research initiatives funded by commodity boards. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, ask questions, and prepare for the upcoming 2025 growing season. Notably, insect scouting workshops for cotton and soybeans will be held after lunch, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at both locations, aimed at providing practical skills and knowledge for pest management.
Clemson University has also applied for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and pesticide credits for attendees. Additional credits for certified crop advisors will be available for those participating in the scouting workshops. Key topics slated for discussion during the field days include:
Throughout these discussions, Plumblee will share insights on managing agronomics for high-yield soybeans, supported by research initiatives from the South Carolina Soybean Board. Moreover, research funded by the South Carolina Corn Board will focus on trials concerning starter nitrogen sources in corn.
Attendance is free for all participants, with both events sponsored by the South Carolina Corn and Soybean Boards. Producers will also learn hands-on methods for pulling soil samples to check for nematodes, an important aspect of crop health management.
