Charleston has been ranked fifth in the latest Sports Business Journal biennial rankings for minor league sports, building on its first-place finish in 2022. This ranking highlights the city’s thriving minor league teams, including the South Carolina Stingrays, Charleston RiverDogs, and Charleston Battery. With strong community support, the Stingrays saw attendance soar during their opening night, showcasing Charleston’s dedicated sports fan base. The improvements at the North Charleston Coliseum further enhance the game-day experience, solidifying Charleston’s reputation in minor league sports.

South Carolina has once again solidified its status as a vibrant hub for minor league sports, as Charleston has been ranked fifth in the latest biennial rankings by Sports Business Journal. This ranking reflects Charleston’s competitive sports market, previously securing first place in 2022 and appearing in the top ten on five occasions.

The ranking highlights Charleston’s thriving minor league teams, including the South Carolina Stingrays (hockey), the Charleston RiverDogs (baseball), and the Charleston Battery (soccer). The Stingrays, entering their 32nd year in professional hockey, have been particularly notable, averaging 4,972 fans per game during their last season in the ECHL.

Strong community support is a crucial component of Charleston’s sports culture. The Stingrays experienced a booming start to their 2024-25 season, attracting over 6,000 fans for their opening night game against the Orlando Solar Bears, where they secured a 4-3 victory in overtime. This enthusiastic attendance exemplifies the deep-seated loyalty of Charleston’s sports fans.

The organization has capitalized on this support by enhancing the fan experience. In response to popular demand, the Stingrays added a third “Chill Zone” seating area at ice level for private events, catering to the needs of their audience while creating growth opportunities alongside their dedicated corporate partners.

Enhancements have also been made to the North Charleston Coliseum during the 2024 offseason, further enriching the venue’s appeal and enabling improved game-day experiences for attendees. These developments contribute to Charleston’s ability to attract a diverse sports fan base, reinforcing its standing in minor league sports.

This ranking by Sports Business Journal is significant, as it evaluates 320 professional teams across 34 leagues from 195 different markets. Since the rankings began in 2005, they have become a key indicator of the health and vibrancy of minor league sports markets across the nation.

The recognition from Sports Business Journal, according to the Stingrays’ president, underscores the cherishable support from their impressive fan base and the potential for further growth in Charleston. With plans for a rewarding season ahead, the Stingrays and other local teams aim to continue fostering their community connections.

Charleston’s minor league sports market not only showcases the city’s passion for sports but also signifies its economic impact and cultural significance within the region. As the 2024-25 season continues, Charleston expects to leverage its ranking to further build upon its successful sports environment, aiming for continued excellence in the heart of South Carolina.
