The production and delivery of these jets is set to occur over a seven-year timeline, from 2029 to 2036. The contract is expected to support approximately 154,000 U.S. jobs each year, contributing significantly to the workforce in South Carolina where all 787 Dreamliners are assembled at the North Charleston facility.

Impact on Local Economy

The North Charleston plant currently employs more than 8,000 workers, and this deal is projected to create a substantial influx of jobs in the area. Local officials and business owners have expressed optimism, viewing this agreement as a potential “game-changer” for the region, which could bring “thousands and thousands of jobs.”

In addition, Korean Air has agreed to purchase up to 50 Boeing planes, some of which will also be assembled in North Charleston, further enhancing the local job market. The local economy stands to benefit substantially from these developments, particularly as Boeing ramps up its production targets for the 787 Dreamliner model, aiming for a rate of 10 planes per month by 2026.

Boeing’s Future Plans and Challenges

Boeing aims to invest $1 billion in its North Charleston facility to facilitate infrastructure upgrades needed to support this increase in production capacity. This investment is intended to create an additional 500 jobs over the next five years, contributing to the overall growth and stability of Boeing’s South Carolina operations.

Despite the positive outlook from this new deal, Boeing has encountered challenges in the past year, including production problems and worker strikes, which have led to layoffs. Currently, the company plans to lay off approximately 220 employees in South Carolina as part of a broader workforce reduction of about 17,000 jobs nationwide, following financial losses exceeding $8 billion in the first nine months of the year.

Operational Streamlining

The current layoffs will primarily impact the North Charleston facility and other locations across the state. Boeing’s leadership has indicated that these workforce reductions resulted from overstaffing issues revealed after a machinist strike. The company is anticipated to streamline its operations by early 2027, coinciding with the expansion and improvement efforts currently underway in South Carolina.
